Through his work with young people, his international creative work, and his contribution and work with not-for-profits here in Aotearoa, New Zealand, he has transformed individuals, families and communities. He is the heart of the Mika Haka Foundation.

Vision

As Executive Director and Founder of the Mika Haka Foundation, Mika believes in enabling all people to follow their creative dreams and aspirations. He is passionate about educating people on the benefits of healthy living, physical activity, creative expression and self discipline. Mika believes in a holistic approach to education, to provide an environment that allows creative talents, abilities and skills to flourish.

History

Mika was born in Te Wai Pounamu, the southern island of Aotearoa, New Zealand. The young Mika was a Māori breakdance pioneer, winning the seminally important Flashdance Champs. Ever hungry for a challenge, he turned to aerobics, finishing 8th in the Tokyo World Competition.

In the coming years Mika cemented his place as a Kiwi icon. He went on to perform for Prince Charles at Holyrood Palace, warmed up for Grace Jones in New York, and wowed audiences at an astonishing seven Edinburgh Festivals. Through his illustrious career Mika has won acclaim throughout New Zealand and thrilled audiences across the UK and US, France, Australia and the Pacific Islands, as well as Tokyo, Montreal, Mexico City, Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Milan and Moscow.

Today, Mika enjoys enviable reputation as an accomplished artist and respected individual. His work spans stage, film, television and music. He has released six albums and three TV shows on Māori Television. With one foot poised in the past, Mika is always looking towards the future.

Elders

Responsibility Mika has and continues to value the advice from kaumatua (elders) of all communities he works with. These have included Ngapo Wehi, Rev Mua Strickson Pua, Carmen and Ngamaru Raerino. Part of Mika’s strength comes from the support and advice given to him by those who have now passed on including our Maori Queen Te Arikinui Te Atāirangi Kahu & Henare Te Ua.

Corporate Responsibility Program

Mika’s production company, Pātangaroa Entertainment acts as the Patron for the Foundation, aiding in the achievement of it’s mission. Patangaroa Entertainment assists with project delivery as well as providing administration and office facilities for the foundation.
